RE: Georgia/ N. Florida Break Point for VA to Disney Trip

Having experienced the uncertainities of DC traffic in the past, if you don't want to push your first day as far down as north of Jacksonville, there is Savannah Oaks RV park which is right off the interstate around Savannah. It is okay for an overnight stop and is handy to the interstate.
I'll be leaving very early, and I'll be going against all of the DC rush hours traffic.

Oh, and in theory, we would only need to stop when the driver needs a break.
In practice, however....

If it were just the 2 of us, Wally World might be fine. Who knows what the temps will be like then, but if I'm drycamping at a Wally or Flying, I'd probably need to have the windows open. It won't be very quiet in either of those locations, particularly the Flying J.
After more than 10 hours of driving with (then) almost 3 year old and 5 year old, plus the out-laws, I'm going to need peace and quiet and a lot of rest.:Z
Brunswick and the KOA sound like good options. I'll have the Woodalls directory with me, too.

I should add that I need to put my slides out to use the sofa bed for the out-laws.
That rules out Wally World and Flying J.

Georgia/ N. Florida Break Point for VA to Disney Trip

In May, I'll be taking the family and the out-laws to Disney from Virginia, just outside the DC Beltway.
I'm only a few miles from 95, so I'll be taking that all the way down. I THINK I can get the crew to leave early from our house. I'm not certain I could have that luck 2 days in a row.
I'd like to get deep into Georgia or maybe even hit northern Florida the first day. That way I'll have a short drive on day 2, and we can enjoy the Fort in the afternoon/evening.
I'll have a 40' MH and pulling a toad (no, not the Road Runner), so I'd like a pull-through place near the interstate. Amenities aren't important.
I'd like a few options, depending on how far we get. I'll be the only one driving. I've never done a long trip like this in the MH. I keep my speed around 60 in the MH, mostly to keep things simple and minimize lane changes.
Google says a straight shot would take between 13 and 14 hours, but that's in a car and without stopping. I'm hoping I can leave at 5 AM and go for 10 hours. In May, that should leave plenty of light for setting up.
Thanks!

RE: Washington DC Campground

As others said before the posts were deleted, they are predicting a crowd that the roads, public transportation and port-o-potties won't be able to handle.
I believe you are referring to a thread in General regarding the January Inauguration. The OP here is looking for a campground in early June. No posts have been deleted from this thread.

The Metro parking garages will fill up very early. Take a bus to the Metro.

No umbrellas will be allowed, so if it rains, you'd better have a rain suit.

Does it come with a lime green leisure suit, shirt with no buttons down to the belly and a bunch of gold chains?

RE: Towing With Dinghy Engine Running

I checked the owners manual of the Taurus X before I bought it. It says you can tow 4 wheels down or with a tow dolly on the FWD model. You can only tow 4 wheels down with the AWD model.
Obviously having only the rear wheels spin with AWD causes a problem. Like many AWD systems, it's FWD until is senses rear wheel slip.

RE: Towing With Dinghy Engine Running

Are people able to get past the tranny pump problem on some cars by towing the dinghy in neutral with the engine running?
Can not remember who it was, but I remember recently reading about a couple people who tow their toads 4 down with the toad engine running and transmission in neutral. One commented on his extremely high mpg for the toad and the other commented on having done this for something like 25,000 miles with no problems. Almost think one of them was towing a PT Cruiser with a automatic. Do not know if this would work with all transmissions or not.
I'm a newbie to RVs in general, and am just now getting ready to set up my Fjord Taurus X as a toad.
I don't know if this is a universal issue or not. The Dinghy guide says that PT Cruisers with manual transmissions can be towed 4 wheels down. Ones with a specific auto trans can as well (I forget the footnote wording).
So, with the PT Cruiser, the trans is the limitation, not the brackets for the tow bar or any other issue.
They only reason I even noticed it was it's winter and you could see the exhaust from the toad.

RE: Towing an enclosed trailer

It might be easier to pull a pickup 4 wheels down with the motorcycle in the bed of the truck.
A 20' enclosed trailer will limit you to a small toad if you want a motorcycle in it, too.
As mentioned above, make sure your hitch can handle it, and make sure you have enough GCVWR available.

Towing With Dinghy Engine Running

I passed an Allegro Bay on the DC Beltway pulling a PT Cruiser (convertible IIRC) and I could see the exhaust coming out of the PT.

I just bought a Fjord Taurus X AWD because it can towed 4 wheels down and carry 6 people.

RE: Fort wilderness at disney world

I just changed my reservations from Premium to Preffered since my brother-in-law might come and stay in a tent. There's not enough grass in the premium sites for staking a tent, from what I've heard.
I requested loops 100 or 200, but I've never been there before. I'll have the out-laws with me (in their 70s), too, so it would be good to have a short trip to the marina.

RE: LSD/ULSD big screw-up!

That Flying J hasn't received LSD since late 2006/early 2007.
They just haven't had the tank certified.
Since LSD gives better mileage, those with older engines would love to get LSD.
So, by not certifying the tank, they can make some people think they're getting LSD.

If you are absolutely, 100% certain of who the offending dog owner is, pick up the poo with a rubber glove and put it on their doorhandle.

That picture of the open trailer isn't my model. I have the optional electric jack. I haven't had any problems with it hitting any dips yet.

I guess I've been spoiled by my V nose trailer. That prevents any crunching.
